Only
on this blog could you find a review of one of the century’s best films
followed by the third instalment of a comedy based on drinking too much and
taking memory loss drugs. The Hangover, when I first saw it as a spotty
teen in the cinema, was the funniest, most original comedy I had ever seen at
the time. I walked out of the cinema in such a happy mood and to this day that
film has to rank somewhere in my top ten favourite movies. The Hangover Part
II was never going to be as good as the first, but I think they did as well
as they could, and they did it by making the resulting ‘hangover’ consequences
even more outrageous than the first film – the face tattoo, sleeping with a
transvestite and getting shot instantly spring to mind. I think the third film
actually did fairly well in keeping the storyline going and also keeping it
funny, but it was always going to be a step too far. I’m happy that Ken Jeong,
the infamous ‘Leslie Chow’, got the limelight in this one. He spent years making
me laugh in Community and he is one of the main reasons the first film
did so well. The Wolf Pack’s usual back-and-forth has lost its humour the older
I have gotten, but I liked the emphasis on Alan’s (Galifianakis) hatred for Stu
(Helms) in this. I’m going to be honest – no matter how badly it ages – I will
always have a special place in my heart for The Hangover. I have to
admit though, Part III is for fans of The Hangover and nobody
else.
