This
one needs no introduction. A worldwide box office success, I think it is
currently the ninth highest ever and counting. It is brilliant for black
culture and representation of black people in film, especially within large
Hollywood blockbusters. However, I think the film itself, although good, is
overrated. The hype surrounding it and its context within the current circumstances
is what makes it a wonderful film and explains the rave reviews it has been
getting. Outside of that though, it’s just another action-packed superhero
movie filled with ridiculously good-looking people and clichéd jokes. Rachel Morrison,
the art department and the editing team all did a fantastic job in making it
such a visually stimulating film. However, the writing and acting is not as
good as I would have liked to see from a strong cast. Michael B. Jordan’s
acting is either terrible or amazing and I can’t decide which. His delivery is
so poor in many scenes, however if he is doing it to portray the Killmonger character
as distant and unhinged then fair enough. I didn’t like the silly jokes and
modern references to selfies, but maybe I’m stuck in an older generation. My
dislike of this film is unimportant because overall, it’s an important step in the
right direction for cinema.
