The
Zimmer-Nolan combination wins again. Dark Knight, Dark Night Rises, Interstellar,
Inception and now this. Why would either of them do a movie without the
other? Probably because they are both incredibly talented. Zimmer has too many
classic movie soundtracks to count. I already sang his praises on day 7, and he’ll
go down in history with the likes of Morricone, Williams and Jarre. The concept
of this film was pretty cool as we followed three different parts of the same
story, yet each part conveys a different period of time. The film is of course
based on the evacuation of allied troops from Dunkirk where civilian boats had
to pull together and help with the rescue effort. We follow the evacuation over
the period of a week on land, specifically a group of young soldiers trying to
find a way off the beaches. We follow a father and son, and the son’s friend,
in their boat over the period of a day, as they head over to pick up troops. Finally,
we follow three spitfire pilots over the course of an hour as they attempt to provide
air support to the evacuating army. It was a good way of doing it, I didn’t
quite feel the emotion I thought I would when all the civilian boats turn up, I
didn’t think it was a very emotional film. The only emotional bit was on Rylance’s
boat, I won’t spoil it. It’s tense all the way through thanks to Zimmer’s
intense music. It was also shot beautifully. However, there was something
missing, and that thing was the difference between a good film and an epic one. You
can’t have it all Nolan.
